- The Coordination of Crucifixion
- Mock praise
- Coming into His Kingdom
Reflection questions:
How does reading Luke 1:29-33 affect how we read this event of the crucifixion? What do crucifixion and kingdom have in common?
Matthew (20:21ff) and Mark (10:37ff) record James and John requesting Jesus to allow them to sit on his left and his right when he comes into his kingdom. What is Jesus’ response? How does the crucifixion text fit with that request and response?
In what way does the cross function as a coronation event?
In your own words, describe the mocking of the soldiers and the priests. What stands out to you as ironic in their mocking? What do we, the readers of this gospel and Christians this side of the cross, know that these soldiers and priests do not?
Jesus’ unwillingness to save himself from death does not prevent him from extending salvation to others. How does this help us grasp the identity of Jesus as our savior?
How does Jesus’ death demonstrate the kingdom of God? Read John 18:36. In what way(s) does Jesus’ response to Pilate regarding his kingdom reveal the truth about what Jesus does on the cross?
What kind of Kingdom does Jesus reveal through his crucifixion? What are the implications for those who follow this messiah? What teachings of Jesus are fully demonstrated through his death?
This week, look for 1-1-1 opportunities: 1 thought-1 word-1 act. Spend time reflecting (1 thought) on Jesus’ Death and Resurrection. Share your thought (1 word) with at least one person (whether they are Christian or not). Do one thing (1 act) that demonstrates response or gratitude for God’s good news.
